Within the past few months, I've finally ponied up and purchased a real laptop. I've had several laptops but none that I could say could accomplish anything that my home PC can and this one can do that without even breaking a nail. I must say that Gateway had a HELL of a deal on this baby (it's refurbished) and I took full advantage of it.
As I'm so fond of the little bugger (little being relative - it's a 17" widescreen) I wanted to make sure that I had some type of under laptop cooling system. I originally started out with one of those little two-fan devices that sits under and plugs into a USB port. However, it really didn't keep it *that* cool, it took up a USB port and it was built for a 15" computer rather than a 17". I went searching the net to find out what everyone else suggested and came across a post about the ILap Laptop Stands. Although they were originally built for Macs, they have them available for PCs and they are even brushed silver and go perfectly with my pretty little Gateway.
I got my stand in the mail within a few days of ordering it and found that it's solidly built and quite easy on the eyes. It's light and has pads on front and back for using when in the lap. You can remove the front pad to use it on a solid surface (which is what I find myself doing at the moment) and it puts the laptop at a nice angle for use. It also seems to take away a fair amount of the heat without any type of extra mechanical component and without straining the computer by using the USB port to run fans.
I put it in the seat of the my work vehicle for the first time tonight and found out something pretty cool. I removed the front pad because I was putting the stand on the seat and found that the stand lists with the slant of the seat. However, if one takes the front pad and puts it underneath the lower end of the stand in the seat, it allows the computer to sit almost exactly level. Very nice for use inside a vehicle.
It was less than $100 but more than $50 and the one that I got was the most expensive and biggest one that they had to offer, ordering the stand for the 17" widescreen. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a cooling device that doesn't have moving parts and still gets the job done.
